Union railway minister, Suresh Prabhu when visited Pernem railway station to flag off a local train connecting Pernem to Karwar, said “My plans are to see that by next year, the Maharajas’ Express train which has won awards for three consecutive years as the world’s best luxury train should make trips in Goa, Maharashtra, and Kerala by the next rainy season so that the posh tourists from across the globe will come to Goa”.

He further added, “The fare of the train per day is 1.2 to 1.5 lakh and tourists with that spending capacity will boost the local tourism business.”

The Maharajas’ Express has won a number of travel awards. The train has been voted ‘The world’s leading luxury train’ three times in a row at the World Travel Awards for the years 2012, 2013, and 2014. The train runs on five circuits which cover more than 12 destinations across north-west and central India. The train mainly covers destinations in Rajasthan and is operational between the months of October and April.

Prabhu also said that soon India will see a boost in the railway network and the rail facilities.

“We are starting a separate company, taking into account the 17 states and that company will take up the development of railways in those states. The state government will provide capital, and we will also pump in capital into the company,” Prabhu added.
