Expensive yes, but worth it!

"My wife and I travelled from Delhi to Agra (for the Fort and Taj Mahal), Ranthambore (for the Tiger Reserve), Jaipur (for the Fort and City Palace), returning to Delhi. We have travelled on the Venice Orient Express and the Rovos Rail in South Africa so can compare the three. The Maharaja's Express is a wonderful way to see India, As much of the travel is at night, time is not wasted on long car journeys. Some daytime travel ensures you experience India - many people reside alongside the tracks, so you see how they live, as well as the contrast of beautiful countryside. The train is very comfortable and the service extraordinary. The staff cannot do enough for you. Our butler Ankush was always on hand to met our every need. The food is excellent, chef John Stones providing a variety of choices to suit everyone. There is even a paramedic on the train, so when my wife felt unwell (her fault, not the train's), she was cared for quickly and made a speedy recovery. Hygiene is first class and none of the other guests had any problems. The rooms are spacious and with en suite facilities (shower and loo) - similar to the Rovos Rail, but far more room than the Orient Express, which has bunks and no en suite. You must remember this is a large moving train so all expectations should be realistic. It reflects how the maharaja's and their entourage travelled years ago and is an experience to be valued.Yes it is expensive, but it gives god value - everywhere you go you are given royal treatment, especially at the Taj Mahal and the City Palace evening event, which includes up-close elephant contact (feeding and riding if you wish) plus an Indian dance performance and meal. Our thanks to the train General Manager Hemant Kumar and his team for looking after us so well - go for it if you wish to see India in comfort and style. Its a train not a hotel, beds shake bring sleeping pills.

Great tour, First class all the way. As to the value for money, well for the exact same price I toured South India with my wife on a private tour by Le Passage to India Company . That included 3 meals a days for two, first class hotels ( 4 or 5 stars), A private guide and chauffeur that stayed with us for the 3 weeks (21 full days) in an air conditioned vehicle. That gives an idea of what you can get for the price of a week on the maharaja express. Other then that it was majestic and excellent.
