Experience in Kerala
Kerala, apart from being called God’s Own Country, has much more to offer. It is no doubt a beautiful destination to visit in India but the words cannot define how wonderful and majestic the experiences are in Kerala. From hill stations to wildlife, from beaches to religious shrines, there is so much to explore.
Starting from the capital Trivandrum, visit hill stations like Munnar, Wayanad for their breathtaking beauty, Thekkady for its bountiful flora and fauna, Kumarakom for its pristine beaches, Alleppey for glistening backwaters, and so on. Indulge in ayurvedic treatments, tour the spice plantations, witness wild elephants, exotic birds, and witness the vibrant traditions like Kathakali performances, temple festivals, and interesting snake boat races.
Clothing in Kerala
The traditional clothing of Kerala for women is literally called the ‘Kerala Saree’. You may also call it mundum neriyathum in the local language. They are two pieces where one is draped on the lower part and the other is worn over a blouse. Traditionally, it was tucked inside the blouse but nowadays it is worn over the left shoulder. Also, flowers are a big part of Kerala’s ceremonial attire. Women wear flowers in their hair and both men and women wear them around their necks.
For men in Kerala, the clothing is called Mundu. It is a long garment worn on the bottom half of the body and tucked around the waist.; it reached their ankles. Now that’s conservative! There is also a drape taken over the shoulder that completes the look. However, in rural areas in Kerala, men wear Kasavu Mundu. It is a thicker cloth with a silk border and Christian Keralans tend to wear this only at weddings or ceremonial occasions. If you’re wondering about lungi, then it is casual wear for Keralites. But now jeans and t-shirts are widely worn by people, especially the young generation.
Food of Kerala
Arabian, Malabari, and French influenced, a phenomenal mix of flavors is what makes Keralan cuisine finger-licking. Each dish that you will savor will burst different flavors in your mouth, representing a touch of the state’s culture. Seafood is mainly served in most restaurants and is a major of local weddings and ceremonies. Some of the must-try foods in Kerala include banana chips, appam and stew, Malabari biryani, Karimeen Pollichathu, Chemmeen, Ulli Theeyal, Erachi Ularthiyathu, Kozhi Porichathu, and Sulaimani Chai.
Dance and Music of Kerala
Music and dance are an integral part of Indian culture and Kerala is not less. It has nearly 50 dance forms and each of them is beautifully performed by the finest dancers with mind-blowing expressions. And the costumes and ornaments add character to the dance. Theyyam, Thiruvathirakali, Chakyar Koothu Koodiyattam, and Ottamthullal are some of the popular dances of Kerala. Kathakali and Mohiniattam are what attracts tourists worldwide.
The music of Kerala too is astonishing. It comprises the Margi and desi styles - Margi follows the classical tradition based on set principle and Desi has emerged from the regional tradition with a more easy-going set of rules. Sopana Sangeetham, however, is considered a traditional genre, ethnic to Kerala that influences Kathakali music.
Festivals of Kerala
Kerala celebrates many festivals with much enthusiasm and each of them represents a glimpse of the rich heritage of the state. Some of the most celebrated festivals of Kerala are Onam Festival (Aug/ Sept), Kerala Boat Festival, Thrissur Pooram Festival (Apr/ May), Attukal Pongala Festival (Feb/ March), Vishu Festival (April), Makaravilakku at Sabarimala Festival (14 Jan every year), and Theyyam Festival (Dec).
