Welcome to your Maharajas Express heritage of India tour Day IV. On the fourth day of your itinerary you will wake up in a cidade azul, the ‘blue city’ in Rajasthan. Jodhpur is the second largest city of Rajasthan second only to Jaipur.
The city is also known as ‘Blue city’ as most of the house structures in the old city are painted in blue and are best seen in their true splendor from Mehrangarh Fort’s ramparts. The 4th day of the Maharajas’ Express itinerary entails sightseeing of this grand desert city which despite its harsh living conditions is one of the most flourishing and colorful cities in Rajasthan.

Even as you wake up to find the train rolling into the city, you will be served your breakfast either in the restaurants, lounges or in the privacy of your cabin should you choose it. You might find it incredible to believe as you behold the stark landscape spool by through the carriage window, that Jodhpur could get as colorful and fulfilling experience as it would get.
Before you embark on the local sightseeing let us take an aside to get acquainted with this city’s past. The city of Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodha, the leader of the Rathore clan, in 1459 AD. The city was built as the new capital of Marwar and flourished due to its strategic location between Delhi and Gujarat which was a major trade route with merchants dealing in opium, copper, silk, sandals, date palms and coffee. Much of the Old city now lay in ruin but the resplendent fort of Mehrangarh nestled on the rise above the hillock and overlooking the city.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and lavish meal on onboard and get ready for local sightseeing tour. Pay a quick visit to the Old Clock Tower, the local market and later proceed to Mehrangarh Fort. . The fort is one of the largest forts in Rajasthan and was founded as the site of Marwar’s new capital most of the modern city is built around this landmark.
The fortress of Mehrangarh is perched on a 150 meter hillock with massive ramparts build around the edges. You can visit several minutely carved and decorated palaces and temples inside the Mehrangarh fort complex which includes Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal, Zenana Deodi and Chamunda Mataji Temple.
The highlight of the fourth day of Maharajas Express itinerary is the barbecue at the Royal courtyard of Mehrangarh Fort. An array of gourmet cuisines which includes traditional Marwari delicacies served in royal ambience along with platters from around the world. Optionally, you may also choose to rejuvenate and reclaim your senses by opting for spa session at a palace hotel.
Return later to the comforts of the plush interiors of the Maharajas’ Express where your dinner will be served in the restaurants of the train. Rejoice in the happy memories of the day in one of the lounges or bar, sip in on good times and engage in conversation with your fellow travelers before you retire into the pampering of your bed to rewind yourself.
